An Open Letter to Dodgers Fans (and One Very Patient Husband)

First, let me begin by saying: I am deeply sorry.

To the entire Dodgers organization, to their fans everywhere, and especially to the one sitting on my couch in a 1988 World Series T-shirt with a cartoon caricature of a man named Oral (no, that’s not a joke). A T-shirt which, during the off-season, lives in the same drawer as the box my wedding ring came in — and has never, ever been washed.

Earlier this week, in an innocent comment reply on my blog, I casually (and apparently prematurely) mentioned that the Dodgers were in the World Series. They are not. Right now they’re playing the Milwaukee Brewers in the National Championship. A harmless mistake, right?
Wrong. According to Bubs, this is the kind of cosmic jinx that can derail an entire postseason.

Never mind that I was sure the World Series was next because the Dodgers just won some other series. Never mind that baseball season seems to last approximately eleven and a half months of the year. What matters is that I put it in writing, on the internet — and now, if the Dodgers lose to the Brewers, it will be my fault alone.

So, to every Dodgers fan clutching their rally towels: I repent. I hereby promise not to speak, type, or even think the words “World Series” until it’s mathematically, spiritually, and MLB-officially confirmed.

Bubs, I’m sorry for tempting fate. I’ll even wear the lucky shirt if it’ll help (though maybe not in public).

And if the Dodgers do win? Well, clearly that means I manifested it and you owe me big.

    If I have understood correctly, the LA Dodgers are now in the World Series. Good luck Craig - but why, as an Albuquerque boy, are you a fan of an LA team (or does it not work that way in there US?)?

      Hey Andrew! I just actually posted a brand new blog about this! So with American baseball they have minor league teams that feed players, coaches and staff into major league teams. So it's very possible to go to a relatively small stadium and see baseball superstars who are at the lower level team for injures or to sharpen play. That's why he's not a fan of the Texas teams.

I found my husband's blog post that made us reddit "famous"--one year ago today. Here it is (with my comments).

Like so many of my posts--this one deals with sexual assault, please read with caution if that may bother you! This is also a long one--sorry in advance! I think we are having a baby today--getting this all out now so we can go the hospital in peace.

 So here we are April 13th--I woke up this morning having pretty severe contractions. Only this time they are pretty regular. We are timing them and they are lasting for about 30 seconds and coming every 10-15 minutes or so. My OB wants me to head in when they start to happen every five minutes. I think we are going to have a baby today.  I don't want to go to the hospital mad at my husband and even I am tired of fighting with him. So I am going to write this all out, hit the publish button and do my damndest to let it go. I have to admit that I don't fight fair with Bubs and if I were to give in to my irrational thinking, I could be upset with him as I'm delivering a baby. I don't want to bring our new child into the world like that.
