I'm here and ok--I just had a pregnancy scare that caused me to spend an overnight in the hospital--but all is good!
I hate blog posts that start off with "I had a major health scare!" and then force you to read well into the post before getting to the part where they are ok. Both me and baby Cado are fine! But it's been an interesting couple of days.
I can't believe it's already Thursday and this happened on Tuesday...it was highly recommended I stay in bed for a couple of days and I guess I must have really enjoyed the rest.
I know most of my readers are men, so sorry guys, this may be a little gross, please forgive me. On Tuesday morning I dropped the kids off at school and it started to feel like I was getting my period. I got home and had a small but signifgant amount of blood in in my underwear. I spotted a tiny amount during both my other pregnancies so I wasn't panicked but it got my attention. I went about my daily chores and as I was reaching up to put a dish away I felt a gush of blood, it was so much it was actually running down my legs. That caused me to panic. I called Bubs right away and thank god he was on his way to the base (much closer to our house than his office/lab) and he turned around right away. I called my OB and her NP told me that I needed to get to the ER right away. Bubs got home and we immediately went to ER/hospital.
The bleeding got their attention and I was taken back right away. I was way more calm than I thought I could be but I was hooked up to what seemed like every machine imaginable and kept hearing nurses and doctors say things like "baby is slightly stressed and we need to keep an eye on you" which really started to freak me out. I was seen by several NPs and Doctors but the staff OB didn't get around to me for a long time so Bubs and I just tried to keep each other company and keep our minds busy. When the OB finally did get to me he said that "out of extreme caution" he was going to move me from the ER to a room in the hospital. That really freaked me out and it got worse because it was time for school to get out and without family around, Bubs had to go pick up the kids. It really sucked being alone but the hospital staff did a great job making me feel comfortable and help me stay calm but they were leaning more and more that they wanted to keep me overnight for observation--which really sucked because I would be there by myself.
Bubs came back with the kids and they were both pretty freaked out to see me all laid up but all in all they handled it like champs. I have to give my husband extreme credit here, he had called his bosses wife (who I adored in both of our visits prior to moving but we haven't had the chance to connect since our arrival) and she agreed to meet him at the house and she would stay with the kids overnight. It made me feel very loved that he said he wasn't going to let me be in the hospital alone overnight.
So when test results started to come back we got the very good news that the blood was from a blood vessel bursting "inside" (there's a technical name that kind of grosses me out) and that was the reason for the blood. Apparently they are rare but can happen in pregnancy from not taking it easy enough and injuries. They couldn't pinpoint exactly when it started but the OB thinks that when I stretched up to put the dishes away, it turned a small tear into a big one. He still wanted me to stay overnight to keep an eye on me and the baby. But as the night went on the news kept getting more and more encouraging. I think they started to prep me to go home at about 6 am and I couldn't wait to get into our own bed.
I left with instructions that I needed to really try to stay in bed for a few days and let the hematoma cure. What they were concerned about is that the blood mask more signifgant issues. When we got home we found Bub's bosses wife with the kids in right order to get to school which was really impressive. She asked if we needed her to stay and we said no but she said she was going to stop in and check on me anyways which was very sweet. Bubs worked it out that he could work from home until I'm up and moving and he has done an amazing job of being something between a loving caretaker and a prison guard who won't let me do anything for myself. But once again, I have to count my blessings with how lucky I am.
I have a follow up with my OB on Monday with instructions to head to the ER if it gets worse before then but so far everything seems fine. I am a very, very woman indeed. Thank you Bubs...you are the best and I am hopelessly and madly in love with you.
Take care of yourself!!
