Reddit strikes again.

My idea going forward was that I would cross post all my blog posts here and on reddit but after Friday, I'm not sure if that's such a good idea anymore. I guess I should say that my new reddit account appears to be intact and in fact I just posted there and it seems fine. So please feel free to interact with me over there as I know the conversation is so much easier.

Bubs on the other hand wasn't so lucky. I believe you can still read comment on my last reddit post (I'm not going to say his username because I have no idea how reddit is keeping track of us) but if you click on the account, it says it's suspended. That account lasted maybe all of 10 minutes.

As to the content of his post, guilty as charged. I couldn't believe he would actually try to hide Sour Gummy Worms from me. We've fought over who gets access to the "good' worms (the pink/blue and red/yellow) since we were literal kids. I've always won and he's stuck eating the orange/green worms so I thought it was hysterical that he actually tried to hide a huge bag from me and sure enough I managed to eat all the good worms over the course of a couple of days. I'm surprised it took him that long to find out.

But all that aside, I thought his reddit post was very clever, I thought it was very funny and I thought it was a perfect way for him to slide into the comments. Us having our play bickering sessions over reddit was so fun to me. I was up in the city helping my sisters decorate our brother's new apartment (he's moving in with Genevieve--the girl I set him up with--a whole other blog post coming for sure) and I got a text from Bubs saying to check reddit. I literally laughed out loud at how overly dramatic his post was, replied, showed my sisters, and then went to reply again and his new account was gone.

Again, we have no idea why. All the message from reddit said was "multiple violations of content policy." Bubs has now had three reddit accounts. One he's had for at least a decade, which thankfully was not suspended. The one he created to post on AITA and then the one from Friday. The AITA account was wiped out when my original account was suspended and the new one lasted just minutes. We have no idea what "violations of content policy" have been committed as they don't tell you. Just like all the other times our accounts have been suspended, he appealed and an auto-response came back within seconds denying the appeal with no further explanation. I think it's even more confusing that his original account was not suspended because it calls into question how they are keeping track of him. He never interacted with me from that account so maybe it was his response to me? But if that's the case then how is my account still active?

I know this will sound silly but there is something very isolating from being banned form social media with no explanation. It feels very inhuman, draconian and even dystopian. Again, I know I'm being dramatic but there's a real sense of exile that comes from not being able to participate with the rest of the group. Bubs is ok of course but I loved talking with him on Reddit and he's going to heading to Tucson for two weeks to get set up in his new job and do some reserve time, with reddit gone it's one less avenue for us to be able to talk.  Of course we'll text every day but I know we both enjoyed the mix of "do these two people actually like, let alone love each other?" and "uggh get a room you pervs" that came from having a public conversation. Kind of like we were in real life. I guess it was a way for us to give you a slice of who we are without me having to sit down and write a narcissistic blog post that seem so self serving.

I don't know, it's just sad.

  1. I was sorry to see Bubs account banned so quickly.

Very mysterious how they identified Bubs' account, but maybe the fact that your account is much older and his was brand new might be relevant.

Maybe he should create a new account (taking as many precautions as possible to make it distinct - different device, different email address etc) and then leave it alone for a while. Maybe even get someone else to create the account and then Bubs take it over later?

Otherwise maybe the private group may be less likely to bet monitored by the reddit AI systems?

    Who knows?

  2. I agree with you Dani. Social media's suspension policies are out of control. I've been blocked or ghosted on social media without so much as a reason. Where are the days when an explanation was standard? It seems as though civility has been thrown out the window.

I would surmise perhaps a troll from the past is still following you and Bubs somehow. They may be submitting complaints against you and Bubs. Yet still another explanation could be cookies and historical data is still on Bubs' computer/phone. I've had enough counter-hacking/hacking experience to know your computer/phone information can be captured online, even with a VPN. I would recommend perhaps looking at a Tor browser for added security.

If you opt to continue more on the blog instead of Reddit, I would highly recommend moving over to WordPress. Not free, but the features are much more friendly, especially the comments interaction. If you need help or additional information, please contact me.

  3. You can also use DuckDuckGo browser and enable the app tracking protection feature.

    2. that's so interesting! So reddit tried to track you over half a million times ? I wonder what the time frame on that is? That is insane!

    5. There are many concerns about what's tracked, but my main concern is the unique identifier. In the networking world, this may be the Mac address of the network card/interface on the computer's motherboard. All devices have a mac address. It's unique to each device. There are ways to spoof the Mac address, but it would involve some work.

  4. Reddit banned me from making comments on AOAI. I have never understood what I might have said in 3 sentences that managed to break every rule they have

  5. At the end of the day. I'm sure the social media companys and their behaviour in many diferent ways will not stand the test of time. Mark Zuckerberg will in no way be the hero of our time when the historybook are written. There is really no accountability what so ever.

  6. They deserve every word Dani used. Dystopian, Draconian etc. I wonder how bad it would be if they just allowed complete freedom and everyone knew the were walking into a wild west saloon. Sure the scum would be there but maybe it would be better.

From Mexico to Reddit to here…

I found my husband's blog post that made us reddit "famous"--one year ago today. Here it is (with my comments).

I think we are having a baby today--getting this all out now so we can go the hospital in peace.
